scatter gun
Wide-pattern firearm
A scatter gun is a shotgun, so called because it fires pellets that spread out rather than a single projectile.
The term extends to anything that takes a broad, indiscriminate approach rather than targeting precisely: a scatter-gun marketing strategy, scatter-gun questioning.
