declawing

Surgical nail extraction

Declawing is the surgical removal of an animal's claws, most commonly performed on cats.

The procedure actually amputates the last bone of each toe, not just the nail.

Once routine, declawing is now widely considered inhumane and has been banned in many countries and some U.S. jurisdictions.

Veterinary organizations increasingly oppose it except for rare medical necessity.

The shelter won't adopt cats to people who plan on declawing them.
