deadhouse
Where bodies wait
A deadhouse is a morgue or mortuary—a building where corpses are kept before burial or autopsy.
The term is old-fashioned, largely replaced by more clinical vocabulary: The bodies were transported to the deadhouse for identification.
In historical contexts, deadhouses were often attached to hospitals or poorhouses.
