damn Yankee

Despised Union soldier

A damn Yankee is a Northerner viewed with hostility, especially from a Southern American perspective.

The phrase originated during and after the Civil War, expressing Confederate resentment toward Union soldiers and later toward Northern transplants who moved South.

In some Southern usage, a Yankee is a Northerner who visits; a damn Yankee is one who stays.

The phrase retains regional flavor but has softened into something often humorous or affectionate: My grandfather still calls anyone from north of Virginia a damn Yankee.
