dadoes

Lower decorated walls

Dadoes is the plural of dado, which has two main meanings in architecture and woodworking.

A dado is the lower portion of an interior wall when decorated differently from the upper part—typically with paneling or wainscoting.

In joinery, a dado is a rectangular groove cut across the grain of a board, used to receive the edge of another piece: The shelves fit into dadoes cut in the side panels.
