cryptex

Combination lock cylinder

A cryptex is a portable cylindrical vault with rotating letter dials that must be aligned to spell a password before the device opens.

The term was invented by Dan Brown for his novel *The Da Vinci Code*, where a cryptex protects a hidden scroll—if forced open, a vial of vinegar inside breaks and dissolves the paper.

Though fictional in origin, working replicas are now manufactured as puzzles and props: He proposed with the ring inside a cryptex.
