crow's nests

Mast-top observation platforms

A crow's nest is a lookout platform near the top of a ship's mast, where a sailor watches for land, other vessels, or hazards.

The term extends to any elevated observation point: The photographer climbed to a crow's nest above the stadium.

The name comes from the platform's resemblance to an actual bird's nest perched high in a tree.
