credit card hold
Temporary charge reservation
A credit card hold is a temporary authorization that reserves funds without completing a charge.
Hotels and rental car companies commonly place holds to guarantee payment for incidentals or potential damages: The hotel put a $200 hold on my card at check-in.
The held amount remains unavailable to the cardholder until the merchant releases it or the hold expires, typically within a few days.
Also called a preauthorization or authorization hold.
