crack baby
Drug-affected newborn child
A crack baby is a child born to a mother who used crack cocaine during pregnancy, supposedly suffering lasting developmental damage.
The term gained currency during the 1980s crack epidemic amid fears of a generation of neurologically impaired children.
Later research showed these fears were exaggerated—prenatal crack exposure causes less harm than alcohol—and the term is now considered stigmatizing and medically imprecise.
