cowcatchers
Train front wedges
Cowcatchers are the angled metal frames mounted on the front of locomotives, designed to deflect obstacles—originally cattle—from the tracks.
The device pushes debris aside rather than letting it pass under the wheels.
Though livestock rarely wander onto modern railways, the term persists for similar protective structures on trains and trolleys: The old steam engine still had its original cowcatcher.
