counterweighing

Acting against weight

Counterweighing is the act of balancing or offsetting something with an equivalent force or consideration on the other side.

When you counterweigh one factor against another, you're measuring their relative importance or effect: The benefits of the new policy must be counterweighed against its costs.

The term appears in both literal contexts involving physical balance and figurative ones involving competing interests or arguments.
