rent party

Pay-the-landlord bash

A rent party is a house party where guests pay admission or donate money to help the host cover rent.

The practice originated in African American communities during the early twentieth century, particularly in Harlem, where tenants facing high rents would throw parties with music, dancing, and food to raise funds.

They threw a rent party to make the month's payment.
