Espresso with milk
A cortado is an espresso drink cut with a roughly equal amount of warm steamed milk, softening the coffee's intensity without masking it.
The name comes from Spanish for "cut." Smaller than a latte and less foamy than a cappuccino, the cortado has become a café staple: I'll have a cortado and a croissant.
