coopt
Claim for oneself
To coopt is to absorb or take over something, usually by appropriating it for a different purpose than originally intended.
A movement coopts symbols from another cause; a corporation coopts countercultural language for marketing.
The word often carries a note of disapproval—what's coopted loses its original meaning or power.
Also spelled co-opt.
The establishment coopted the revolutionary rhetoric.
