credit-union
Nonprofit lending cooperative
A credit union is a nonprofit financial institution owned by its members, who pool their deposits to provide loans and other banking services to each other.
Credit unions typically offer better interest rates than commercial banks because they return profits to members rather than shareholders: I got a better car loan rate through my credit union.
