contrecoup
Brain's distant bruise
Contrecoup refers to an injury, especially to the brain, occurring on the side opposite the point of impact.
When the head strikes a surface, the brain may bounce against the far side of the skull, causing damage there rather than—or in addition to—where the blow landed: The CT scan revealed a contrecoup lesion.
From French, literally "counterblow."
