expanded forms

Written out fully

Expanded forms are versions of something written out more fully.

In math, an expanded form shows a number as the sum of its place values: 523 becomes 500 + 20 + 3.

In grammar, expanded forms use auxiliary verbs where contracted forms don't: I am rather than I'm, do not rather than don't.

The phrase implies spelling something out that could be compressed.
