continental US
Mainland American territory
The continental US refers to the 48 states that share a continuous land border, excluding Alaska and Hawaii.
Alaska, though on the North American continent, is separated by Canada; Hawaii is an island chain in the Pacific.
The term distinguishes the contiguous mainland from these outlying states: Shipping to the continental US is free; Alaska and Hawaii cost extra.
