facies
Rock unit's character
Facies is a technical term for the general appearance or aspect of something.
In medicine, it describes the distinctive facial appearance associated with a disease or condition: the characteristic facies of Down syndrome.
In geology, facies refers to the overall characteristics of a rock unit that reflect its formation environment—a limestone facies indicates shallow marine conditions.
The word is Latin for "face" and appears almost exclusively in scientific writing.
