weak base

Incomplete proton grabber

A weak base is a chemical compound that only partially accepts protons or donates electrons when dissolved in water, reaching an equilibrium rather than reacting completely.

Ammonia is the classic example.

Weak bases produce fewer hydroxide ions than strong bases like sodium hydroxide, making them less corrosive: Baking soda is a weak base used in cooking and cleaning.
