complex characters
Layered fictional people
Complex characters are figures in fiction whose personalities, motivations, and behaviors resist simple categorization.
Unlike flat characters who embody a single trait, complex characters contain contradictions, evolve over time, and provoke ambivalent responses: The novel's complex characters made it impossible to root for anyone completely.
Also called round characters.
