flat characters
One-dimensional fictional personas
Flat characters are fictional figures who lack psychological depth or complexity, typically embodying a single trait or serving a single function in a narrative.
Unlike round characters, who grow and change, flat characters remain essentially unchanged throughout a story.
They often serve as foils, comic relief, or background figures: The loyal butler remained a flat character, existing only to announce visitors.
The term comes from E.M.
Forster's literary criticism and carries no inherent judgment—flat characters can be highly effective when a story doesn't require complexity from every role.
