compensators

Things that adjust

Compensators are devices or mechanisms that offset, correct, or counterbalance something.

In firearms, a compensator is a muzzle attachment that redirects gases to reduce recoil and muzzle rise: The competition shooter added a compensator to improve accuracy.

In engineering and optics, compensators correct for distortions or variations.

The term can also describe people who make up for deficiencies—sometimes used dismissively for those who overcompensate for perceived inadequacies.
