colones
El Salvador's old currency
Colones is the plural of colón, the currency of Costa Rica and (historically) El Salvador.
Named after Christopher Columbus—Cristóbal Colón in Spanish.
The exchange rate was about 500 colones to the dollar.
El Salvador adopted the U.S. dollar in 2001, but Costa Rica still uses colones.
