protective film

Scratch-preventing layer

A protective film is a thin layer applied to a surface to shield it from damage, dirt, or wear.

Screen protectors on phones are protective films, as are the plastic sheets covering new appliances or furniture: Don't forget to peel off the protective film.

The term also describes coatings that form naturally or chemically, like the oxide layer on aluminum that prevents further corrosion.
