coca tea
Peruvian leaf brew
Coca tea is an herbal infusion made from the leaves of the coca plant, traditional in Andean regions of South America.
The tea contains small amounts of the alkaloids used to produce cocaine, though in concentrations far too low to produce that drug's effects.
It's commonly consumed for altitude sickness, energy, and digestion: Street vendors sell coca tea throughout La Paz.
Coca tea is legal in Peru, Bolivia, and other South American countries but illegal to import into the United States.
