coastal routes
Roads hugging water
Coastal routes are paths of travel—by sea or land—that follow a shoreline rather than crossing open water or cutting inland.
Ships historically took coastal routes to stay within sight of land and near safe harbors.
Roads and railways along coastlines are also coastal routes: The scenic coastal route added two hours to our drive but was worth it.
