coastal island
Near-shore land mass
A coastal island is an island located near a continental or mainland shore, as opposed to oceanic islands far out at sea.
Coastal islands often remain visible from the mainland and may be connected to it at low tide: The ferry serves several coastal islands along the sound.
Many coastal islands support permanent communities with close ties to the nearby mainland.
