co-existence

Sharing space peacefully

Co-existence describes the state of two or more things existing together, particularly when they might otherwise be in conflict or competition.

The term gained prominence during the Cold War as peaceful co-existence, referring to the idea that capitalist and communist nations could share the world without warfare.

In ecology, species achieve co-existence when they occupy the same habitat without one driving out the other.

The hyphenated spelling is common in British English; American English tends toward coexistence.
