climbing holds

Artificial rock protrusions

Climbing holds are the grips attached to artificial climbing walls—molded shapes of plastic or resin that simulate natural rock features.

They come in various forms: jugs offer deep, comfortable grips; crimps are small edges requiring fingertip strength; slopers are rounded with no positive edge; pinches must be squeezed between thumb and fingers.

Route setters arrange holds to create problems of varying difficulty.

The gym just installed new climbing holds on the overhang.
