climate migration
Weather-driven displacement
Climate migration is the movement of people driven by environmental changes—rising seas, drought, extreme weather, or other effects of a shifting climate.
Unlike refugees fleeing war or persecution, climate migrants often relocate gradually as conditions worsen: Coastal communities face climate migration as flooding becomes routine.
The term encompasses both internal displacement and cross-border movement, though international law has yet to establish clear protections for climate migrants.
