Cliffhangers are stories or episodes that end at a moment of suspense, leaving the outcome unresolved.
The term comes from serialized fiction where a character might literally be left hanging from a cliff until the next installment.
Now it applies to any dramatic situation with an uncertain outcome: The election was a cliffhanger, The season finale ended on a cliffhanger.
