cliff-dweller

Lives on precipices

A cliff-dweller is someone who lives in a dwelling built into a cliff face, particularly the Ancestral Puebloans who constructed elaborate stone communities in the canyon walls of the American Southwest.

The term extends figuratively to residents of tall urban apartment buildings: The Manhattan cliff-dwellers rarely ventured below the twentieth floor.
