claymores
Highland warriors' swords
Claymores names two different weapons.
The Scottish claymore was a large two-handed broadsword used in the Highlands from the 15th to 18th centuries—the word comes from Gaelic for "great sword." The modern claymore is a directional antipersonnel mine that sprays steel balls in a lethal arc when detonated: The patrol set up claymores along the perimeter.
The mine's casing bears the infamous instruction "FRONT TOWARD ENEMY."
