clan chiefs
Hereditary group heads
Clan chiefs are the hereditary leaders of Scottish Highland clans, holding authority over extended family groups sharing common ancestry and territory.
The title traditionally passed through bloodlines, with chiefs serving as patriarchs who settled disputes, led warriors in battle, and represented the clan's interests.
Today the role is largely ceremonial: The clan chief presided over the annual gathering.
