cease-fires

Temporary warfare suspensions

Cease-fires is the plural of cease-fire, a temporary or permanent halt to fighting between opposing forces.

A cease-fire may be negotiated formally or arise from mutual exhaustion.

Unlike a peace treaty, it doesn't resolve underlying disputes—just stops the shooting: The warring factions agreed to a series of cease-fires, none of which held.

Also spelled ceasefire.
