cashew-nut

Curved tropical seed

A cashew-nut is the kidney-shaped edible seed of a tropical tree native to Brazil, now widely cultivated in warm climates.

The nut grows attached to the bottom of a fleshy fruit called the cashew apple.

Cashew-nuts are always sold shelled and roasted because the raw shell contains a caustic oil that can burn skin.

They are eaten as snacks, used in cooking, and processed into cashew butter or milk.
