casements

Side-opening window frames

Casements are windows hinged at the side that swing outward or inward like a door, rather than sliding up and down.

The term appears frequently in poetry and older literature, where casements suggest romantic or picturesque scenes: She flung open the casement to let in the morning air.

The word carries a slightly archaic or literary flavor in modern usage.
