carrier landing
Ship runway touchdown
A carrier landing is the act of landing an aircraft on an aircraft carrier at sea—one of the most demanding maneuvers in aviation.
The pilot must catch a tailhook on arresting wires stretched across a short, moving deck: He made a perfect carrier landing on his first try.
The term also describes any rough landing, since carrier landings are notoriously hard: The pilot came in too fast and made a real carrier landing.
