Vehicular communication devices
Carphones are telephones installed in automobiles, a technology that preceded mobile phones.
The term was common from the 1980s through the mid-1990s, when cellular phones were bulky units mounted in vehicles: He called from his carphone while stuck in traffic.
As handheld mobile phones became standard, the distinction faded and the word fell out of use.
