red hat
Scarlet head covering
A red hat is simply a hat that is red.
The phrase also refers to a newly appointed Roman Catholic cardinal, from the traditional red biretta (a square cap) presented at their investiture ceremony.
By extension, red hat can mean the office or dignity of a cardinal itself: He received the red hat in 2019. (Capitalized Red Hat is the software company.)
