camp fever
Crowded quarters illness
Camp fever is a historical term for typhus and other epidemic fevers that spread through crowded, unsanitary conditions—military camps, prisons, ships.
The name reflects how contagion thrived wherever people were packed together with poor hygiene: Half the regiment was lost to camp fever before they saw battle.
