buyin

Initial poker payment

A buyin (also written buy-in) is the amount required to enter a poker game or tournament: The buyin for the main event is ten thousand dollars.

More broadly, it's any upfront cost of participation.

As a concept, buy-in means acceptance or commitment, especially from stakeholders whose support is needed: We need buy-in from senior management before proceeding.
