buffalo chips

Dried bison droppings

Buffalo chips are dried buffalo dung, historically used as fuel on the treeless American plains where wood was scarce.

Settlers and travelers collected them for campfires.

The term sometimes extends to dried cattle dung used similarly.

In casual speech, buffalo chips can be a folksy euphemism for bullshit: That's a load of buffalo chips.
