brutalization

Making someone callous

Brutalization is the process of making someone brutal—stripping away sensitivity or humanity through exposure to violence or harsh conditions.

Soldiers undergo brutalization in combat; prisoners experience it in abusive systems.

The word also describes the act of treating someone with extreme cruelty: the brutalization of civilians during the occupation.

Either way, brutalization suggests degradation—becoming less than fully human, or being treated as such.
