bread riot
Famine-driven civil unrest
A bread riot is a violent public uprising triggered by food shortages or unaffordable grain prices.
These disturbances were common in Europe from the medieval period through the nineteenth century, when bread constituted the primary caloric source for ordinary people.
The term now applies to any civil unrest sparked by hunger or food insecurity: The government feared bread riots if wheat imports were blocked.
