ben

Highland mountain term

Ben is a Scottish and Irish word for a mountain peak, borrowed from Gaelic: Ben Nevis, Ben Lomond.

In Scottish dialect, ben also means the inner room of a two-room cottage, opposite the outer room or "but"—hence the phrase but and ben for a small cottage. (Capitalized Ben is a given name.)
