bolt hole
Secret hiding place
A bolt hole is a place of escape or refuge—somewhere you can retreat to when things go wrong.
The term comes from a hole through which a hunted animal might bolt to safety.
In British usage especially, it often means a small secondary property: They keep a cottage in Wales as a bolt hole.
Also spelled bolthole.
