bolthole

Secret safe place

A bolthole is a place of escape or refuge—somewhere to retreat when things get difficult.

The term comes from holes that allow rabbits and other burrowing animals to bolt from predators.

In British usage especially, it describes a private hideaway: She kept a cottage in Wales as a bolthole from London life.

Also spelled bolt-hole.
