boatlifts
Sea rescue operations
Boatlifts are organized evacuations or migrations by sea, typically involving large numbers of people fleeing political upheaval or disaster.
The term evokes images of crowded vessels and humanitarian crisis: the Mariel boatlift brought 125,000 Cubans to Florida in 1980.
A boatlift may be government-sanctioned or improvised by desperate civilians.
